Sophia and the Starry-Sky Spectrograph
Ages 6–8
Sophia builds a colorful spectrograph to capture and analyze the hidden light of distant stars, turning the night sky into a beautiful rainbow of data.
Children learn that light is a secret language, and by building simple tools to observe it, they can discover the hidden composition of the universe.

Sophia looked up at the night sky. The stars were bright white dots, but Sophia wondered if they were hiding colors. she held up her prism and saw a tiny rainbow appear on the grass. Could stars do that too?
Sophia decided to build a spectrograph. It is a long tube that splits light into a rainbow. she taped a piece of a shiny old compact disc to the end of a tube. she worked slowly, making sure every edge was sealed tight.
The tube was ready. Sophia peeked through the small hole at the end. she pointed the tube toward a bright porch light first. Wow! A long, beautiful rainbow stretched across the center of the view.
