Jayden's Book of Blessings

Ages 0–6

Every night before sleep, Jayden tries to count up all the small blessings of the day — until a worried, wiggling Pip won't settle, and Jayden discovers the best blessing is saving room to say thank you for someone else first.

A gentle nightly ritual of naming blessings — adaptable with Christian, Jewish, or Muslim words and gestures — helps a child feel grateful, grounded, and calm before sleep, and shows that gratitude grows when it is shared.

Thank you for this cozy house, for walls that keep out the breeze. Jayden looks up at one bright star and whispers, "Thank you, if you please." But Pip gives a whimper and paws at his knee — someone else wants to say thank you too.

"Not yet, Pip," Jayden says, "I have so much to say!" But Pip just whimpers louder and will not settle or stay. Thank you, thank you — but the small dog will not sing along.

Thank you for the people who tuck me in tonight, who hum a hum and hold me and turn out the small light. Thank you, thank you, that's the song my heart loves to sing.
