Diego and the Album That Opened Like a Door

Ages 5–8

When Grandpa's old photo album glows open like a magic door, Diego steps into the villages, harbors, and kitchens of the family's past — and discovers he belongs to the story too.

A child moves from feeling unsure where he fits to feeling proud, earned belonging in his family's story.

Grandpa Iso patted the sofa. "Come sit," he said. "This old album is a door, Diego. Open it, and we walk right in." He climbed up close, though a small worry fluttered: would any of this old stuff feel like his?

The cover creaked open and light poured out like sunshine from a jar. A tiny village square glowed on the page. "That's where I was small," Grandpa Iso said. "Step in and see, and tell me — doesn't it feel like ours?"

Whoosh! Diego stood in a sun-warm square with terracotta rooftops all around. Children chased a wooden hoop past a fountain. He shuffled his brown shoes on the cobblestones, unsure. This wasn't his square. Was it?
