Malik and the Star Named Biscuit

Ages 4–8

When Biscuit is gone, Malik is too sad and too angry to talk about it, until a flower, a memory, and a small bright star show him that love does not disappear, it just changes shape.

Sadness is love with nowhere to go, and remembering the ones we lost is how we let it land softly.

The house felt too quiet. No little paws pattering. No happy snorting sound by the door. Malik sat on the porch steps, arms crossed tight, and did not want to talk. Not one bit.

"I don't want a new flower," Malik said, kicking a pebble off the path. "I want things back the way they were." His chin wobbled but he would not cry. Not today.

He stomped past the flowerbed three whole times. He would not dig. He would not plant. "It won't bring Biscuit back," he said, voice cracking just a little at the end.
