Hana and the Wonderful Wait

Ages 3–5

At a birthday party, Hana feels the cake wait stretch on forever, until she imagines becoming a caterpillar snug inside a chrysalis, turning fidgety minutes into a quiet, wing-growing kind of magic.

Children learn a concrete coping tool for impatience: give yourself a snug self-hug, name a fun new word, and busy your hands with a small task while you wait.

The cake stood tall with swirls of gold, its candles waiting to be lit. Hana hopped from foot to foot. "Is it time? Is it time?" She bounced and bounced, but time stood still.

"Soon," said a voice, smoothing hands along the cloth. But soon felt slow, slow, slow. Hana's tummy fizzed and wiggled with big, waiting feelings.

Lila peeked out from the butterfly bush. "Psst! Come see!" A real butterfly floated by, slow and unhurried, like it had all day to fly.
