Mateo and the Midnight Toy Chest Ball

When the grandfather clock strikes midnight, Mateo's toy chest creaks open to reveal a glittering ballroom where every well-loved toy comes alive to say thank you.

Tick, tock, tick, tock, sang the tall clock's chime. Mateo sat up in bed, wide awake at midnight time. A sliver of gold light peeked beneath the playroom door. He slipped from bed to see what magic waited there.

Creeeeak went the toy chest lid, slow and low and deep. Mateo tiptoed closer in his cloud-soft slippers, tiny brass key jingling on its ribbon. Something golden glowed inside, waiting to be seen.

Out marched Captain Buttons, click-clack, standing straight and true. With a snap of his wooden heels he gave a sharp salute to Mateo. "Ballroom awaits, small friend! Will you march down too?"
