Theo and the Treehouse Caesar Shift Code

Ages 6–8

When a mysterious squiggle-covered note turns up in the old oak treehouse, Theo builds a spinning cipher wheel to crack the code and race the clock to reach the scout troop's secret meeting.

Kids see that codes are just patterns waiting to be solved, and that careful, patient thinking is a superpower.

Theo loved secrets almost as much as he loved climbing trees. So when Pip trotted up with a scrap of paper clenched in its jaws, Theo's heart thumped. The paper was covered in strange wavy squiggles that made no sense at all. "What is THIS?" he whispered.

"Let me see!" said Nessa, sliding down from the treehouse window. She pushed up her round glasses and studied the wavy marks. "This isn't nonsense," she said slowly. "Somebody drew this on PURPOSE. It's a secret code."

"A code for what?" Theo asked. Nessa tapped the paper. "Look here—it's about the troop's meeting spot! If we crack it, we'll know exactly where everyone is gathering today." Theo's eyes lit up. A puzzle AND a mission? He was ready.
