Mateo and the Case of the Chipped Tooth Tire
Ages 6–8
When Mateo's bicycle disappears from the school rack, he grabs a magnifying glass and follows its own telltale chipped tire track clear across the schoolyard to solve the mystery.
Careful, patient observation, even through a wobble of doubt, can solve a worry step by step without ever assuming the worst.

Mateo skidded to a stop at the bike rack, sneakers scuffing the pavement. Gone! His shiny bicycle, parked right there this morning, had vanished without a trace. "Nell," he whispered, "something strange happened here." Nell's paper ears shot straight up, and a low, curious growl rumbled in his little chest. This called for a real investigation.
He knelt down slowly, knees pressing into the warm pavement. "A good detective never guesses," he said. "A good detective looks." Right there in the soft dust was a thin curved tire mark. He pulled out his magnifying glass and leaned in close. One tiny notch broke the smooth line, like a missing puzzle piece, small but unmistakable.
"A chipped tooth!" he said. "This tire has a broken bit, right there. If I find that same broken bit again, I'll know it's MY bike's trail." He sketched the notch carefully in his notebook, tongue poking out in concentration. Nell wagged his tail hard, thump-thump-thump against the pavement, ready to follow the trail wherever it led.
