Thud. Thud-thud. Every night at ten o'clock, something bumped above Mateo's bedroom ceiling. "There it is again!" he whispered, pulling the blanket down just enough to peek up. Whiskers the cat sat bolt upright, ears twitching toward the sound. Tonight, Mateo decided, the mystery would finally get solved.

"I keep hearing thumping right above my room," Mateo said at breakfast, tapping his spoon on the table. A mug clinked on the table. "Same time every night?" a voice asked from beside him. "Ten o'clock exactly," Mateo said, pulling out his little notebook. "I'm going to find out what it is."

That afternoon, Mateo pulled down the creaky attic ladder with a little help. "Careful on the steps," said a voice from behind, steadying the ladder's frame. Dusty light slanted through the round window above, and old trunks huddled in the shadows. "This is where the thuds come from," Mateo whispered, magnifying glass ready.
