Sami and the Whispering Cave Echo

Ages 6–8

When ghostly voices seem to whisper from the deepest dark of a tourist cavern, Sami grabs his notebook to time every echo, calculate its delay, and map exactly how sound waves travel through solid rock and hidden air shafts.

Kids learn that scary-seeming sounds often have a logical, discoverable explanation, and that timing echoes and mapping sound waves can solve real mysteries.

"Welcome to Whispering Hollow!" called Marisol, a curly-haired guide in a forest-green vest, sweeping her lantern toward the glittering tunnel. Sami clutched his notebook, proud of every mystery he'd filled its pages with, and hoped this cave might hold a real one before summer ended. Somewhere deep inside, something echoed... almost like a voice.

Deeper down the path, a low moaning sound rolled through the chamber. "Ooooo... ooooo..." Pip dove behind Sami's collar, trembling. "That's a ghost, I just know it!" But Sami didn't run. He pulled out his pencil. "Ghosts don't echo on a schedule," he said. "Let's time it."

"One... two... three..." Sami counted seconds between each ghostly moan, scribbling numbers in his notebook. "It comes back every eight seconds," he announced. Marisol raised an eyebrow. "Ghosts that punctual? I've never heard of that in all my years guiding here."
