Diego and the Lakeside Light Code

Ages 6–8

When a mysterious light starts blinking across the lake at Diego's campground, he must decode its pattern of dots and dashes, one careful blink at a time, to find out who is calling and why.

Kids see that patient observation, a little self-correction, and simple codes can turn a mystery into a moment of teamwork and fun.

The campfire crackled low as Diego, in his forest-green zip-up jacket and striped tan-and-white shirt, sat wrapped in the smell of woodsmoke, notebook open on his knees. Across the black lake, something flickered. Once. Twice. "Ranger Coral," Diego whispered, "that light on the far shore-it's not a firefly. It's blinking on purpose."

"Grab your notebook and come closer to the water," said Ranger Coral, coiling her rope over one shoulder. She led Diego, still in his forest-green zip-up jacket and striped tan-and-white shirt, down the sandy path to the dock. "Some lights on this lake like to talk. You just have to learn to listen with your eyes."

At the end of the dock, Diego, in his forest-green jacket, knelt and watched the light again. Short. Short. Long. "That's not random," he said, pencil scratching fast. "Short flashes and long flashes-like dots and dashes. Short, short, long-what do you say? Ranger Coral, I think it's Morse code!"
