Ben's Sundial Mystery

Ages 6–8

When the garden sundial and every wristwatch disagree by a whole hour, Ben grabs a magnifying lens and a notebook to solve the mystery of clock time versus sun time.

Kids learn that clocks are human inventions we sometimes adjust (like for summer time), while the sun's steady path across the sky never changes.

"Pip, look!" Ben crouched by the old stone sundial, notebook ready. The shadow pointed to 3:00 -- but his wristwatch clearly said 4:00 PM. "That's not right," he whispered. "Something strange is happening in this garden."

Mira hopped over the hedge, yellow jacket flashing. "Did the sundial break?" she asked. "Or," Ben said, eyes wide, "did something bend time itself?" Pip barked, as if he agreed something spooky was afoot.

"Let's not guess -- let's measure," Ben said, kneeling by the gnomon's shadow. He pressed a straight stick into the dirt beside it. "If the sun moves steady, the shadow should match every clock outside... shouldn't it?"
