Milo and the Counterfeit Toy Coin Balance
Ages 6–8
When a sneaky fake toy coin sneaks into a chest of nine identical toy coins, Milo must use a two-pan balance scale only twice to catch the lighter impostor before the Clubhouse Fair begins.
Children see how splitting a big group into three smaller groups makes a tricky puzzle solvable with patience and confidence.

"The Fair starts in one hour!" chirped Pip, wings whirring. Milo stared at nine round toy coins spread on the table, each stamped with a tiny star. One was secretly lighter than the rest. "We can only weigh twice," said Milo, lifting the little brass balance scale. "Split in three, and you'll soon see."
"Nine is a lot," said Pip, hopping closer. "Should I weigh them one at a time?" wondered Milo, chin in hand. Then he shook his head. "No — too slow! Split in three, and you'll soon see." He scooped the toy coins into three little piles of three. "One weighing tells me which pile hides the fake."
Milo set the first pile on the left pan, the second on the right. "If the fake is lighter, its pile will float up higher," he said. Pip leaned in so close its beak nearly touched the brass pan. The scale trembled, deciding which way to tip. "Watch closely," whispered Milo.
