Priya and the Mystery of the Blue-Ribbon Pony

Ages 6–8

When the show pony Bramble mysteriously refuses every jump, Priya must look closer than any grown-up has to find the tiny hidden cause of his trouble.

Children learn that careful, gentle observation—not just quick answers—can uncover the real cause of a problem, and that kindness and patience matter as much as cleverness.

At Willow Brook Stables, everyone loved Bramble the show pony. But today, something was wrong. Three times he trotted toward the red-and-white jump, and three times he stopped short, tossing his head. "Something's wrong, boy," Priya whispered, leaning close to the fence. "That's not like him," said Mira, frowning.

The vet checked Bramble's legs, his teeth, even his eyes. "He seems healthy," she said, puzzled. Bramble hadn't limped once in his deep, soft stall, so she never thought to lift that hoof. "Look closer. Every clue counts," Priya murmured, crouching by the stall door with the magnifying glass.

Priya stepped into Bramble's stall. The straw bedding was piled thick and soft, almost up to her ankles, softer than she had ever seen it. "This is deeper than usual," she murmured, tilting her head and running her fingers through the straw. "Mira, do you always bed his stall this high?"
