Nia and the Case of the Squeaky Stairs

Ages 6–8

Every night something creeps downstairs and empties the cat's food bowl, so Nia maps every creaky floorboard, bells the one silent step everyone must cross, and uncovers a surprising family of midnight visitors.

Curiosity and careful observation solve mysteries better than fear, and even surprising "pests" deserve a kind, safe solution.

Every morning, Pepper's food bowl sat empty and licked clean. "Someone's sneaking in at night," said Nia, tapping her magnifying glass. "And I'm going to find out who." Behind her, the little pet door in the wall sat quiet as ever. This was her biggest case yet.

First, Nia needed a map. She spread graph paper across the living room floor and began drawing every room, every doorway, and every single stair. "If I know the house," she said, "I'll know where the thief walks. Case notes: start with the floor plan."

Step by step, Nia walked the whole staircase, pressing down hard on every plank with her sneaker. Creeeeak! Groooan! Squeeeal! Each noisy board got a mark on the map. Case notes: almost every stair sings like a rusty gate.
