Nora's Starlight Cipher

Ages 6–8

When a mysterious perforated card arrives, puzzle-loving Nora discovers it holds a secret sky-map that can only be read by lamplight, leading step by step to a hidden treasure box tucked among the roots of a park oak tree.

Children learn that patient observation, and pushing through a wrong turn instead of giving up, can turn small clues into a real discovery.

Nora loved a good puzzle more than almost anything, so when she found an envelope on the doormat, no name, no stamp, just a black card poked with tiny holes, her heart thumped. "Milo," she whispered, "this is a real mystery." Milo blinked slowly, which Nora decided meant yes.

Up in her attic bedroom, Nora turned the card over and over. It looked like nothing, just a plain black rectangle with little punched dots. But she once read that nothing is really nothing until you shine a light on it. "Worth a try," she said. Milo yawned one word: "Obviously."

Nora clicked on the brass lamp and held the card between the bulb and the wall. Tiny stars bloomed across the wallpaper, scattered and glittering like a whole night sky had leapt indoors! "Milo, look!" she gasped, her voice barely a breath. "It's not just dots, it's a sky!"
