Nora and the Backyard Feather Mystery

Ages 6–8

When Nora finds a strange striped feather in the backyard, she must use clues, counting, and a trusty field guide to solve the mystery of which bird it belongs to -- and learn a scientist's most important rule: look, don't take.

Kids learn that careful observation, patient comparison, and respecting wildlife (look, don't take) are the real tools of a scientist.

"Pockets, look!" whispered Nora, freezing mid-step. Something bright and stripy poked out of the grass by the fence. It was NOT a sunflower petal. It was NOT a leaf. Nora's detective instincts tingled. Whatever this was, it looked like the beginning of a very good mystery.

Up close, the feather was even stranger. It had thick black bars crossing bright yellow stripes, like a tiny striped flag. "A real detective never touches evidence with bare hands," Nora reminded herself. "What does the evidence say?" she whispered, and looked, and looked some more.

"There's a feather clue over here!" Nora called toward the fence. A hand waved back, and a warm voice floated over the sunflowers: "A clue, eh? Sounds like a job for your field guide. Go fetch it, detective!"
