Lin and the Crane's Hidden Message

Ages 6โ€“8

When a mysterious folded paper crane taps against her window, Lin must memorize every crease before the ink inside starts to fade, unfold it without a single tear, read its secret, and fold it all back exactly right.

Every mystery can be solved one careful step at a time โ€” and the best detectives remember before they move.

Tap. Tap. Tap. Something landed on the windowsill with the softest little thud. "A crane! A CRANE!" Pip squeaked, bouncing on the desk. Lin looked up from her notebook โ€” a paper crane, folded so neatly it looked like it might fly away again.

Lin lifted the crane into the light, turning it slowly. "Every fold is razor-sharp, Pip. Someone made this on purpose." Pip sniffed at it, whiskers twitching. "Ooh, a code! Open it, open it!" "Not yet," said Lin. "First, I look."

"Careful, careful, careful," Lin murmured, opening her notebook. "I have to remember every crease before I touch a single fold." Pip pressed both paws to his cheeks. "I could NEVER wait that long," he squeaked, hopping in a tiny circle.
