Malik and the Defender of the New Kid

Ages 6–8

When a new student sits alone in the cafeteria, one kid dares to leave his popular friends behind and discovers that kindness needs no shared words.

A gentle reminder that reaching out to someone who feels left out — even without shared words — is a simple, powerful act of courage and kindness.

Malik loved lunchtime. He loved the clatter of trays, the smell of warm bread, and sitting with his best friends, Priya and the gang, right by the window. But today, something new caught his eye — a kid he had never seen before, sitting all alone.

The new kid stared down at his tray. He didn't laugh at any jokes. He didn't say a single word. Malik whispered to Priya, "Do you know his name?" Priya shrugged. "He just moved here. He doesn't speak our language yet."

Malik watched the new kid all through lunch. No one waved. No one smiled at him. He looked small at that big table, all alone. What if Malik went over and everyone laughed? His tin lunchbox sat heavy in his hands. Tap, tap. He always tapped it when he was thinking hard.
