Mateo's Iron Heart

Ages 6–8

When three goals slip past him in the championship match, Mateo must find the courage to keep his heart in the game, make one miraculous save, and shake hands like a true champion.

Resilience isn't never falling — it's standing back up, cheering for others, and shaking hands with grace whether you win or lose.

The championship match had begun! Mateo bounced on his toes in the goal box, tapping his lucky coin necklace twice. "Iron heart, stand tall," he whispered to himself. The crowd roared. Somewhere, a whistle blew, sharp and bright.

A Falcons striker zoomed forward and kicked hard. The ball zipped past Mateo's fingertips and into the net. Goal number one. His stomach dropped like a stone, but he clapped for his own team anyway. "Get the next one," he called.

Two more goals slipped by. Three goals! Hot tears stung Mateo's eyes and his chin wanted to drop. Then he remembered his grandfather's words: "A goalie's heart is made of iron, even when it hurts."
