Kofi and the Giant Rollercoaster

Ages 6–8

At the amusement park, Kofi feels his stomach twist at the sight of the giant rollercoaster, and while every friend insists they aren't scared, he finds the courage to say the truest, hardest sentence of the day: "I'm terrified, and I don't want to ride."

Children learn that naming fear out loud is an act of courage, not weakness, and that honesty can give others permission to feel safe too.

The park gates swung open, smelling like popcorn and sunshine. "Race you to the coaster!" Mateo shouted, already sprinting. Kofi looked up at the giant rollercoaster twisting against the clouds and felt his stomach twist too. He touched the red pouch at his belt. Twist, twist, twist.

In line for lemonade, Mateo puffed out his chest. "That coaster's nothing. I'm not scared of ANYTHING!" Priya adjusted her glasses and said nothing. Sam laughed a little too loud. Kofi squeezed the red pouch. Twist, twist, twist went his stomach, but he stayed quiet.

They wandered past the carousel, its painted horses gleaming gold. Sam tugged Kofi's sleeve. "Aren't you excited? Everyone rides the big one." Kofi's throat went tight. He swallowed hard and just nodded, his feet stuck to the ground like glue.
