Ben's Bicycle Repair Day

Ages 6โ€“8

When a little neighbor's bike chain slips off and ruins his afternoon, Ben grabs a trusty toolbox, hoping he really can fix it alone, and patiently sets the ride right link by link.

Kids learn that patience and hands-on problem-solving are a real, everyday kind of heroism that helps a whole community.

Ben rolled his bike slowly past the big oak tree, tin toolbox rattling in the basket. He had fixed a squeaky gate once, and a wobbly wagon wheel too โ€” but always with someone watching over his shoulder. Today he wondered: could he fix something all on his own, start to finish?

"WAIT! WAIT!" someone wailed. Sammy stood frozen by the brick wall. His little red bicycle lay tipped sideways, its chain hanging loose and greasy like a broken necklace. "It just... stopped!" Sammy said, his lip wobbling. "I can't ride to the park now. Everyone's already there without me!"

Ben hopped off his bike and knelt beside Sammy's. Pepper sniffed the chain and gave a worried little whine. At first the bent metal fender looked bad, like something snapped โ€” but leaning closer, Ben saw the truth. The chain hadn't broken at all. It had simply slipped clean off the gear teeth.
