Sofia's Vigilant Eye

Ages 6–8

At junior lifeguard training on a bustling beach, Sofia keeps a steady watch over the waves while others get distracted, and when a swimmer is pulled into a rip current, her sharp eyes and quick whistle spark a life-saving rescue.

Quiet, steady attention and the courage to speak up can matter more than being the loudest or flashiest one in the group.

The morning sun poured gold over the beach. Sofia tied on her white visor and clipped the orange whistle around her neck. "Today," said Coach Marisol, "junior lifeguards keep eyes on the water, not on the waves of chatter." Sofia nodded, eyes already drifting to the sea.

Up on the tower, Sofia sat tall and still, red shirt bright against the blue sky. Below, other junior guards giggled and traded seashells. Theo waved a striped shell in the air. "Look what I found!" he called. Eyes on the water, Sofia reminded herself, and kept watching the rolling blue.

"Come see my shell collection!" Theo called again, grinning. For one second Sofia wanted to run down and dig in the warm sand too. But she took a breath and shook her head. "I have to watch the swimmers," she said, and turned back to the shimmering sea, eyes on the water, scanning left, then right.
