Sofia's Great Volcano Team-Up

Ages 6–8

When her science group falls apart before the big fair, Sofia learns that a great leader doesn't do all the work alone — she finds the right job for every hand.

Kids see that fair, calm delegation — giving everyone a specific, doable task — builds a stronger team than doing everything yourself or giving up.

Sofia loved a good challenge, and this one was the biggest yet: a class volcano project, worth a whole grade, due in one week. "Team Fizzling Four," Ms. Ortiz announced, pointing at Sofia, Milo, Priya, and Deshawn. Sofia grinned and gripped her yellow clipboard tight. "Everybody gets a job that fits," she whispered to herself, already planning.

By the next day, trouble bubbled up. "This is boring, let's just wing it," Priya said, waving off the plan sheet. Deshawn crossed his arms. "I'm not doing the measuring. It's not my job." Sofia felt her stomach twist like a knot. The poster board sat blank as snow.

Sofia grabbed a pencil and tried to sketch the volcano herself — but the lines came out crooked and messy. She scribbled it out, frustrated. Then she remembered how her own class group last fall had failed when one kid did everything. "Everybody gets a job that fits," Sofia murmured, and looked around the table with new eyes.
