Mei and the Skatepark Pioneer
Ages 6–8
Mei is the only kid who isn't a boy at the neighborhood skate bowl, and every day the stares feel like a wall — until she drops into the deep bowl, lands a clean kickturn, and cracks that wall wide open for every girl who comes after.
Courage plus practice can turn a space that feels closed into one that's open for everyone who comes next.

Every Saturday, Mei rode her yellow skateboard to the concrete bowl behind the park. Every Saturday, she was the only one there who wasn't a boy. Today her sneakers crunched to a stop at the fence, and she counted eleven heads turning to look at her.
"This bowl's for real skaters," one boy muttered, not quite loud enough to be sure Mei heard. She heard. Her cheeks went hot, but she walked through the gate anyway, boots on concrete, heart thumping like a skipped rope.
Mei set her board down at the rim and looked into the bowl. It curved deep and smooth, like a giant stone spoon. Her stomach flipped. She had practiced kickturns in her driveway a hundred times — but never on anything this big.
