Malik and the Maze-Runner Bot

Ages 6โ€“8

When the competition maze suddenly shifts, Malik must out-think the clock and rewrite his robot's logic loop live, sensor by sensor, to steer it safely home.

Debugging under pressure is not a failure moment but the most exciting part of engineering โ€” mistakes are just data.

The gym buzzed with excitement, whistles and wheels squeaking everywhere. Teams lined the maze platform, robots humming and blinking. Malik knelt beside Bolt, his own maze-runner bot, its blue sensor eye blinking awake. "Ready to find the exit, buddy?" he whispered. Bolt beeped twice โ€” his signal for yes. Two beeps. Always two.

"Remember," said Mira, crouching next to Malik with her own team's bot, "your code has to think fast if the maze changes." Malik grinned, patting the laptop. "That's why I built an if/then loop. If wall ahead, then turn. Simple as that!" Mira tapped her chin. "Mazes are just patterns waiting to be solved," she said.

A hand rose from the judges' table. "Robots to your starting marks!" a voice called. Malik set Bolt at the maze entrance, tapping the little screwdriver clipped to his hoodie for luck. "Ultrasonic sensors ready?" he asked. Bolt's antenna whiskers wiggled, and its blue eye pulsed steady. Ready. Set. Almost time.
