Sami and the Longest Glide

Ages 6–8

Sami dreams of keeping a little glider aloft for one whole hour, and must learn to shape its wings and find rivers of warm sky air to make the record-breaking flight happen.

Kids see that patience, careful tinkering, and understanding how warm air lifts things can turn a big dream into a real, earned achievement.

Sami loved the little red glider more than anything. "Someday," he told Zumi, "I'll keep you up for a whole hour!" Zumi tilted its head. "An hour? That's forever!" Sami grinned and wrote the goal on his clipboard: SIXTY MINUTES.

The first launch was short and sad. The glider dipped, wobbled, and thudded into the grass after only ten seconds. "Why won't it stay up?" Sami sighed, kneeling to pick it up from the grass. Nana Pip's sun-browned hand rested on his shoulder. "Let's look at those wings," she said.

Back at the workbench, Nana Pip pointed to the wing's curve. "See this gentle hump? That's camber. A curved wing scoops more air and gets pushed up." Sami traced the paper wing with one finger. "So a flatter wing falls faster?" "Exactly," said Nana Pip.
