Ben and the Beach-Sorting Rover

Ages 6–8

Ben builds a camera-smart rover to spot tiny bits of plastic hiding in the sand, while new friend Marisol cooks up a squishy, compostable bioplastic film — together they team up to protect nesting birds and clean the whole beach.

Kids see that STEM problem-solving (teaching a machine to see, and inventing safer materials) can be a hands-on, collaborative way to care for real ecosystems.

Ben loved the beach — the hiss of waves, the salty wind, the crabs skittering sideways. But lately he noticed something wrong: tiny colored specks glittered in the sand. "Plastic," he whispered. "So small, so many. The nesting birds could eat this by mistake. Teach it, don't blame it," he reminded himself, thinking of the rover he dreamed of building.

"I need a helper who never gets tired of looking," Ben decided. Back at the tide-pool shack, he pulled out wheels, a camera lens, and a bendy hose. "If I teach a machine to SEE plastic, it can sort it out — all day, every day!"

That's when Marisol arrived, her yellow apron dusted with green flecks. "I heard about your plastic problem!" she said. "I'm cooking something too — a plastic that isn't really plastic at all. Watch this!" She held up a jar of brownish-green agar powder. "From seaweed!"
