Nora and the Frostvale Seed Library

Ages 6–8

Deep inside a snowy mountain, Nora must invent a moisture-proof way to seal the world's rarest seeds before they spoil forever.

Children learn that careful, hands-on problem-solving (and trying again after a failure) can protect something precious for generations to come.

Nora tugged her mittens tight and stepped into the Frostvale Seed Library, where a thousand jars glowed like tiny amber suns along the ice walls. "These are the rarest heritage seeds in the world," said Pip, wiggling her antenna. "They must stay dry and safe for hundreds of years, or the Harvest Festival will have nothing to plant!" Nora's eyes went wide. "Then let's make sure that never happens,"

Deep in the mountain, the air was so cold it stung her nose. "Minus eighteen degrees," Pip announced proudly. "Cold enough to make seeds sleep for a very long nap, but not cold enough if even one drop of water sneaks in." Nora rubbed her mittened hands together. "Then my job is to keep every seed bone-dry," she said, lifting her brass seed-loupe to peer at a tiny wrinkled bean.

"Seeds first, snacks later!" Pip chirped, herding Nora toward the Seed Keeper's station, a cozy nook near the great vault door. A pair of gloved hands reached in from behind a curtain of icicles, passing Nora a tray of seed packets. "Try your first seal, little preserver," said a warm voice from behind the ice-curtain. Nora grinned and got to work.
