The winter air was crisp, and the village was waking up for the New Year. Leo opened his satchel and found a special gift: a flat sheet of red paper and a golden brush. “Today,” he whispered to Pip, “I will make a lantern that glows for everyone.”

Leo sat at the stone fountain to fold the paper. It was hard work! The corners had to be sharp, and the edges had to be straight. Pip watched closely, his nose twitching. “It’s a secret mission,” Leo told him. “A light for the whole village!”

Just then, Sasha the squirrel scampered down, looking sad. She had no ribbon to tie her winter nest shut. Leo looked at his own red silk ribbon. It was for the lantern’s handle, but Sasha looked so cold. “Here,” Leo said, “you can have this for your home.”
