Sophia looked up at the night sky. The stars were bright white dots, but Sophia wondered if they were hiding colors. she held up her prism and saw a tiny rainbow appear on the grass. Could stars do that too?

Sophia decided to build a spectrograph. It is a long tube that splits light into a rainbow. she taped a piece of a shiny old compact disc to the end of a tube. she worked slowly, making sure every edge was sealed tight.

The tube was ready. Sophia peeked through the small hole at the end. she pointed the tube toward a bright porch light first. Wow! A long, beautiful rainbow stretched across the center of the view.
