New Year is coming! Laura grabs the ribbon broom, but stops at the door — the street sounds so loud and big outside. Then she sweeps anyway. "Out, out, bad luck!"

Out, out, bad luck! She chases the last speck under the table where Bao the cat pounces, batting dust bunnies like they're the best toy in the whole house.

Babcia Mei's hands are dusted white with flour. "Sweep it clean, start anew," she sings, and hands Laura a small red lantern to hang by the door.
