Aleksander i łagodny głos z ulicy Dębowej
Wiek 6–8
Gdy Aleksander znajduje sąsiedzkiego psa, który uciekł i przerażony siedzi za płotem, odkrywa, że prawdziwa odwaga brzmi jak szept, a nie jak krzyk.

Oak Street smelled like autumn leaves and warm toast. Aleksander walked home slowly, kicking a pinecone, whistle bouncing on its cord. Then a sound stopped him cold: a high, frightened bark, over and over, coming from behind Mr. Alvarez's fence. His heart gave a little jump.
Peeking through the fence, Aleksander saw Biscuit, the neighbor's little terrier, pressed into a corner by the shed with no leash on. His fur stood up. His whole body shook like a leaf in the wind. "Easy," Aleksander whispered through the slats. "I see you. You're okay."
Aleksander's heart thumped like a drum. Every part of him wanted to run screaming for help. But he remembered something from school: a scared animal needs quiet, not noise. He took one slow breath instead, and then another.
