The fair was loud and the fair was bright — popcorn, music, a Ferris wheel light! Аня, in her striped shirt and overalls, held Мама's hand at the striped gate. "Stay close," said Мама, "and have a great day."

Before they went in, Мама knelt down close. "If you ever can't find me, remember our plan." Аня nodded big and said the words: "Stop. Stay. Ask a helper. Say your numbers."

They watched the prize ducks bob and spin. They munched warm popcorn, kernel by kernel. Аня laughed at a clown on tall wobbly stilts!
